MEMORIAL DAY

it wasn't just a stomach ache
the night before memorial day
this was hateful, inspired

the headlights of my camry
settled on st. anthony's
and they yanked it out that night

and in my fever dreams
my appendix screamed
he'd been bitterly betrayed

to the tv in my room
and the sounds of the parade

nurses fawning over me
my juice box a daiquiri
in my own private spring break

i never thought to call my boss
to let her know i wasn't lost
or my mother out of state

and swimming in morphine
my apartment seemed
to be half a world away

and bills steadily stack
was there no way i could stay

thursday i was out the door
dressed like i had gone to war
