What's Wrong 02:18
WHAT'S WRONG if it were to burn blister and disintegrate what would you have learned what would be your takeaway a pivot in your plans a divot in your landscape and uncloudy skies open up you would never say there's nothing wrong but you could easily say there's nothing wrong and if it disappeared buggered off without a trace would it be so weird would you need to pull a face a wrinkle in your flag a ragged left-of-center tape and uncloudy skies open up you would never say there's nothing wrong but you could easily say there's nothing wrong heaven knows you hear it all day long so you should maybe say it say it now if it were to burn blister and disintegrate what would you have learned what would be your takeaway

BLOOD EVERYWHERE for three days everything came up nothing stayed down just a shuddering sound they gave you a test and you might've passed but they sent us right back into the black at home i find your favorite show look in your face look at my phone down an endless rabbit hole i'm just pulling a string you never should pull but you don't notice and you don't protest when i say it's time we get through dinner and at bath you shiver and shake until you're dry you fall asleep too easily and you breathe in air that I wish i could see at dawn i'm camping at your feet i fetch your cereal bowl and your father texts me and the hours scrape along we play a memory game my memory's strong so when that call comes i press that icon and listen carefully they want you right back cause the numbers are bad but somehow incomplete the blood just drains right out of me thick with cells that i never could clean waiting in the waiting room it's just quiet enough for me to review every surface every spoon all that you might've touched or maybe consumed every trace and residue window at home door in your school every blessed molecule where'd it get in what did i do and down the hallways there is always one more turn to take solutions mix and the broken get fixed if they don't fade away and i'm surrounded by announcements promising repair but slipped or chosen blood or poison could be anywhere it's everywhere so don't be scared it's everywhere

Taps 04:19
TAPS i shouldn't have gotten my hopes up like i shouldn't have got my hair did 'cause i missed at least half of their questions and they dressed like loggers and kids so now i just shuffle down to the western line tomorrow's search terms in my head but i just get so tired of waiting think i'll walk instead is there nothing as sad as 4:30 when you haven't been working all day all the neighborhood bars just start waking up their specials so humbly displayed and detergent seeps from their doorways where taps shine like engines so clear i can taste the sweet bitters on my tongue feel 'em disappear "you can't stay here" i shouldn't have stepped off that platform 'cause i can't get an answer at home nor at any dumb sequence i press in to the bottomless depths of my phone so now i'll just worry my chip down to splinters and march back to that baby blue light i close my eyes and i promise whomever i'll keep walking by i won't slow my stride 'til i'm safe inside

UNNAMED STARS i was watching your giant hands baiting hooks and tying knots and opening cans of your favorite every night until the overheads took on a yellower light once hydrated and amplified none of us were bright enough and so you would hide on the back porch and fall asleep counting unnamed stars above how couldn't you weep so by distortion or a cadet glow either way that memory kept a sickening hold as the seasons scurried by and i got familiar with the weight of similar skies but i never loved those high numbers not enough to push me under not enough to never look away oh no and i'm sorry you flickered out but i named one of those poor stars you worried about and he's gorgeous as evergreens and as sure as i was watching you he's looking at me so i'm nervous naturally but that's just something in my blood i'm looking to clean

about

Zapruder Point's songs are in the ballpark of Elliott Smith, Colin Meloy, and Ben Gibbard. Only he doesn’t play guitar as well as Elliott, and he’s maybe half as smart as Colin, and he’s pretty sure he’ll never write anything as good as "I’ll Follow You Into the Dark." Still, he has a unique voice (in the writing sense), and a yearning voice (in the singing sense). Currently, you can sample his recorded music in two forms: The austere, solo Unnamed Stars EP, and the finished-just-in-time-for-the-pandemic full-band album Zapruder Point and the Brightness.

At the turn of the millennium, Dan Phillips created Zapruder Point, writing and recording under that band name for over 15 years in Chicago. Now in Cincinnati, Dan self-releases music and plays out as a solo act whenever it’s safe. Dan's shared bills with Bill Fox, Jason Molina, Bowerbirds, Shelley Short, The Rutabega, Anders Parker, Franklin Bruno, Canasta, Scrawl, Whitehorse, Coed Pageant, Flat Duo Jets, Terrible Parade, Earwig, and Benjamin Francis Leftwich. He can be reached at zapruderpoint@gmail.com.
